Creating a New Account and being Harassed for it...

Mon Dec 13, 2004 9:48 pm

In the past, I've created new accounts when I wanted more pets. I've transferred NP and items to them. I painted the pets in that new account and gave them petpets.

As was my custom, I snuck on to the neoboards to answer questions and send items to people who were being considerate. If memory serves me, I received a large number of rude, accusing neomails, saying that I must be a hacker because my account was new but well established. Even though I stated in my userlookup that I'd played the site for years on other accounts, but people were quick to ignore it.

I was just reminded of this because yesterday, someone in the Help Chat made a board calling another user a liar because they had a 3 day old account and claimed to have a baby paintbrush. The user, who had the Hidden Tower Avatar (which can only be obtained by purchasing something from the hidden tower) and a baby poogle, came in to defend herself. She mentioned that she had received many threatening and rude neomails about her new account with nice pets.

Do you make bad assumptions about people with wealthy, young accounts? Have you ever been harassed for it yourself?

It depends on the account. If the account has a name like neo_10384728477_neo and has four painted pets named neo_8373746, then I wonder, but if they show some sign they they are an established user, then I belive them(a note on their userlookup saying their real account, certain avatars, ect.)

Even though it is sad, many people are judged by thier User Lookups. Having no trophies can get a trade offer refused because you seem to be New Member. Not painting your pets or having petpets can make people think you do not care about your pets.

And yes, being three days old and claiming to have anything of value, makes your cred 0!

The same can be said for a person with 1 post and no siggy or avatar on PPT would not be seen as completely credible.

EDIT: *Points Downward* Because it didn't happen to them?

meh, that's silly, though.
I created another account once and the next day I got a random event saying doctor Sloth gave me a potion worth a bundle. why can't people assume that might happen? o_O

 oK tehn if urz nott a hakker, cend mee 1 mil Np frum ur mane ackunt!11!!1!1!!

Seriously though, you can just sense the jelousy. It's stupid that they assume you're a hacker right away. But they say this not so much because they think some poor person was hacked (some do, anyhoo), but moreso that your account is newer and it is more valuable than theirs. I still cannot belive anyone would go to as much to send you hate mail. Ugh. I'd just say tell them that you're an older player, go ahead and paste your User Lookup in a Neomail if ya want. If they want to argue any furthur about it, I've heard there's a nice blocking feature on Neomail...

Excellent point - the lack of an image in one's signature (that in most cases someone else made for them) is usually reason enough for most members to totally ignore your post. Isn't herd-mentality a beautiful thing?

Users on neopets are constantly warned about scammers, and they constantly see other users say things like, "OMG! I wuz h4x0red!!!!eleven!!! wut do i doo??!?!?!?

So they're trained to be as cynical as possible when it comes to new, yet obviously wealthy, accounts - because they correctly assume that when someone is scammed, their items are taken through a complex set of new or unassuming accounts.

Face it - the users are as pessimistic as can be.

Its a shame people put so much stock in account age....I've seen many 30+ month accounts posting spam and chain letters and giving wrong advice in the HC.

Then again anyone who ridicules someone based on the amount of time they've invested in a virtual world is just...sad :(

Well, one time I got called a liar because I said I'd been playing for two and a half years, and my shield said 15 months. I explained to the person that I was using a different account, and they reported me for using multiple accounts. Did they read the FAQ I directed them to stating that multiple accounts were legal as long as they were not used to gain neopoints? Of course not! Thankfully, I didn't get in any trouble since what I was doing was entirely legal.

Well said.

This only happened to me once(in a way) on my spare account.

I was on my spare account on the neoboards, and somebody claimed that they knew the intire HATIC plot because of a Neopets page. When I said that that wouldn't be true, after a little bit of arguing, he eventually said that I was a stupid newbie that was only on for 3 weeks, and that knew nothing about Neo. This account was kind of just a normal, general new account, if you haven't guessed. I ended up being reported by the player for false reports when I didn't say I reported nor did in fact report anybody, somebody told him that I reported him. He also reported me for harrassment when I harrassed nobody, I just stated that it would be highly unlikely.

Because of this I could understand why you could be accused of hacking/scamming and being harrased.

:D Someone did that to me when I made the clone account. I was on the trades or shops board discussing a price for something. When about 3 people on the board said "But ur a nub, how can u aff0rd it?"

T_T

I'd actually been playing lots of games and restocking for 3 days during my lunch breaks to get my beautiful mutant buzz back :) and had a bit of np left over and so went to spend it on a few codestone lots for cheap.

I didn't get no neomails though. But I do understand people thinking someone may be a scammer if they go round telling everyone of their riches on the boards. Thats asking for trouble.

That hapened to me, once..

I adopted, and transferred painted pets to my new account, ryddelboxxer,((BEFORE it got iced)), and in the middle of an rp, someone blared out, that I was less than a week old, and I had a fire pteri, robot jetsam, kougra, and and a dariga eyrie, and everyone started to harass me.. 0o; I had to leave my own board..

Fidds, I am so sorry to have heard that you had to suffer through that. It is plain jealousy and a "I'm better/more powerful/richer than you" mentality--at least it seems that way on the chat boards.

Just be careful. Tis the season for freezin'. Giving away things on the boards, no matter how well your intentions, can get you frozen. Even though it is not against any rules.

Just ask my daughter, blizzard eater (formerly baby poogle eater), who learned that illogical lesson all too well. All it takes is some jealous, nasty person pressing that handy report button and saying that you are scamming them. Neo doesn't look at the posts before hitting the freeze button--at least they didn't last December when my daughter was giving away presents on the chats. And, the staffer who later unfroze her account even admitted to that in his email. That there wasn't enough staff to do so.

The girl who reported her for scamming was so jealous of her painted pets and great account that she made up a lie so she could report my daughter for scamming--and was bragging about it on the boards after my daughter's account was frozen (lucky thing I was there with screen shots). She ended up getting frozen shortly thereafter for filing too many false reports.

If you feel that you have to give out gifts to others, you might want to do so somewhat anonymously. I had that happen to me a few weeks ago. I had posted something on the boards to help out someone and then shortly thereafter, I had a gift in my inventory. I recognized the name as someone who had also posted on the same board and looked at her siggy. It said that she was giving away gifts to people who helped out other people. She didn't say anything in the chats to advertise that she was giving away gifts. Just that little sentence in her siggy. She basically looks through the chats, notices someone doing something nice for another person, and then sends them a present. Very sweet idea, I thought.
