Maraqua- a rich, city that was cursed and drowned in the vast ocean of Neopia.
Atlantis- also a rich city that drowned in the Atlantic Ocean.
Think about it. By comparing these two cursed, underwater legends, can we see the future of Maraqua (deep, huh?)

I always assumed it was based off of atlantis.
Too bad I was never around when it actually "Existed".

Same here. I wish I could have been around way back then. I do remember someone saying on PPT once that it seemed as if the image of Maraqua was moving closer to Mystery Island. And that statue of a faerie ... Reminds me of one of the Friday the 13th movies, where Jason was at the bottom of the lake and got resurrected.

Wow. That makes so much sence, but I never thought of it...
-Feels dumb-

I remember Maraqua. Despite having a cool name, it was a fairly rubbish place - one of those maps where there are no dailies and nothing worth visiting on a regular basis (or in fact, ever). I wanted to love it but I couldn't because it was useless!
My shop was there though.

Maraqua wasn't really what one would call a rich city. In fact, it's because that they couldn't pay those pirates that the trouble started and that the curse was set. And the fact that Maraqua was already a underwater city before the accident makes it different from Atlantis which became underwater ruins. But, yeah, the two cities are pretty comparable in some parts.

disagree.... you must learn your maraqua history! They were never cursed..... and CERTAINLY not rich, because the reason they sunk was because they couldnt pay off the evil pirates who came to them monthly for money!! And also, maraqua didnt drown.... it was naturally an underwater world.... where the koi lived

thats why it was cool... it was the "water" world...
Atlantis.... well, i dont know if it was cursed... i really dont believe in curses. Whether it was rich or not, we dont know, because we never got to witness it existing, and now its under the sea *sings little mermaid song* and we have little info on it. Also, it wasnt a city.... 'twas actually a lost continant.

Althought it probably DID "drown" due to plate techtonics or something.... so you got one part correct at least. Alantis probably drowned.... as I doubt they lived under the sea.

I think he is referring to the fact that the
old movie about Maraqua and the pirates is titled "A Curse on Maraqua".

just don't think of all of the things that are so different about them. Just think of the legends and think of what they are. I'm an Atlantis freak so maybe i just brought it up becuz of it. Still, in that odd way that you don't know why, they seem very similar

something I'd like to know is, why was Maraqua destroyed? has TNT been planning this THAT long?
Sat Jan 15, 2005 5:22 am
Except ya know...
Atlantis was destroyed by the gods, and not pirates (if thats my understanding of things).

I remember seeing some movie about Atlantis a while back.
Apparently they were a prosperous people, but built so many things on their land that the weight became too great, and they capsized their own city.
o.O

Ok, it seems it's time to educate a few people on the history on Maraqua
Maraqua was an underwater civilisation that was home to the Koi, Kikom Peophin, Flotsam and various other species of animals. The Koi prospered in their peaceful underwater city. There was plenty of Neopoints for all to share and the land was peaceful
That was until a group of rogue pirates (A skull, Blumaroo and Mynci) began bullying them, plundering from them and raiding their houses. In an effort to get the pirates to stop the King of Maraqua agreed to pay for their protection.
Everything was going fine in Maraqua after that, the Pirates made sure nobody else moved in to harm a major source of their income and Maraqua, despited being bullied into paying the pirates money every few weeks, carried on unharmed
Alas, bad luck struck as a mixture of a bad Kelp Harvest, the lack of Tourism, Coral tax and stock depressions caused the Koi King to not have enough to pay the pirates as well as keep the Koi civilisations alive. So he decided enough was enough
The Koi King told the pirates that he refused to pay anymore protection Neopoints and banished the pirates from Maraqua. The pirate leader agreed to this and left, as he did however he swore revenge against Maraqua and its king.
A short while after the banishment of the Pirates a huge Whirlpool formed directly over Maraqua, caused by an ancient Pirate curse bestowed upon Maraqua. It was 10 miles in diameter and caused Maraqua's buildings to be destroyed, its inhabitants lost, and its treasures and riches forever strewn across the sea bed.
A year after the Whirlpool began it finally slowed and stopped allowing people to visit it again. However it was in such disrepair that there was no point. Months after the Whirlpool stopped in 2002 a Giant Sea-slug became it's only inhabitant warning people to go away
In 2003 reports of a strange creature were heard from Mystery Island and a pet vaguely resembling an Acara was seen in Maraqua, emerging from the bubbling pit that had emerged recently.
Reports of Maraqua moving closer to Mystery Island could be heard from the attention seeking New Member on the Chatboards but were swiftly laid to rest after people with half a brain cell checked the 'last modified' date on the image and found it hadn't been edited for months and that the New Member were merely seeing things
Summary :
Maraqua had a few cruddy shops. Nobody bothered going there as there was hardly any content. The shops along with Maraqua was destroyed and the items retired causing the prices to sky rocket. Neopets left it as to be continued and forgot about it. They are only just bringing it back to the site now, 4 years after its destruction. Months ago a Neocamera image showed an artist working on a picture of Maraqua. Though the picture is blurred it looks as if Maraqua will surface during the next plot

Here's my problem with the sinking of Maraqua... how did it affect the fish neopets?
Where else would they have gone? They can't just decide to hike on over to Terror Mountain.

1. Maraqua never "sunk" so to speak. It was always an underwater community. If they do surface it then they'd have to keep half of it underwater
2. The only non-amphibian Neopet is the Koi...and they could just swim around anywhere in the ocean
