What different events can give you paint brushes? And what are the chances of getting one?

I've heard of people getting them from "A Beautiful Fire Faerie", or from "Jacko".
Of course, you can get them from the Fruit Machine.

I think Jacko gives them out..and it is VERY rare to get one you can get a tyrannian one off the WOM I got one a few weeks ago

I believe the alien vending machine also gives them out. I've gotten 2 from Jacko and one from the fruit machine in my time on neo.

The fruit machine is the most talked about, but I like the referal program neopets does which is gauranteed that 10 referals = a random paint brush.

How long have you been on Neo for? I've been on over a year, and all I got was 1 halloween PB from the TYS.

32 months total, 21 months on my current account (I switched main accounts at one point, was never frozen). I got a spotted pb from Jacko when I was a newbie (and sold it WAY too cheaply, of course), then got a split pb from Jacko a little over a year later, then won a striped pb from the fruit machine a few months ago. Guess I've been lucky, though it did take me 21 months to finally get the Pant Devil.

Getting an illo in the art gallery usually gets you a random PB. I don't know about the poetry or other competitions.
Test you Strength has been known to give out halloween PB.
I also heard that a few people got halloween PB from the halloween goodie bags, but that might have just been people trying to inflate the price of the goodie bags.

10 referals isnt too bad. I think I'll refer random people and make them sign up even though they wont play.
