What's wrong with this?

Sat Feb 12, 2005 10:17 pm

I'm rather confused, because a friend of mine got an official warning from the neopets team because of the name of a newly created pet. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with the name "fawkes_qtee" cause I'm honestly stumped. Anyone have any insight into this?

They think you're substituing fawkes for a far more offensive word. Happens all the time. ;)

But when she tried submitting it the first time as "fawkesthephoenix" or something along those lines, with fawkes in it, it told her the name was taken and should change it - so she changed it to tawkes_qtee and got a warning.

They don't catch everything all the time. For some reason, it was singled out this time. Not to say that any of this is fair...

I was FROZEN for the username lord_nword...

No one said it had to be obviously offensive.

It's a wonder that xxxx hasn't been frozen...

because they thought your name meant "n word," or because of lord? ridiculous.

The reason why is because the word "fawkes" seems like a substitute for the F word.

Lord_Nword, your name sounds really inapropriate though. It still shouldn't of been frozen though. A pity.

Oh yeah, Angus, xxxx means what you say it as.

i don't see how "fawkes" is offensive though. i mean, guy fawkes day? bonfire night? i think neopets even mentioned that holiday before

Sat Feb 12, 2005 11:25 pm

Yeah, Bonfire night has been spoken of.

i think its moreso that they thought it meant to be read phonetically fawkes qtee aka #%@%@^@ cutie. that might make sense that they'd do that then. but they barely ever make sense :(

I guess England will have to change the name of Guy Fawkes Day then. And, yes, Neopets did celebrate Guy Fawkes Day and Bonfire Night this year. There was even a Caption Contest about it...

Silly filters -- they warn you about something like this, yet little pests go on the Neoboards all day long and tell people to "Go to ****" and other niceties... :x

I think this is downright idiotic. Fawkes is the name of the phoenix in Harry Potter, and many kids read that, does that mean they will be badly influenced?

And about the Lord Nword, what is the "n word" anyway? I suppose it is a type of vulgarity, but don't people censor vulgarities like that? Like f-word etc. Don't tell me a kid seeing someone with the name lord-nword will go running around to their mom asking what it is about. Thwy won't even think anything about it if they haven't had prior exposure to it (like me, who didn't know what was offensive about that name).

It rhymes... Lord Nword sword ford all rhyme.

Let's not even talk about the fact that I was frozen and others weren't anymore :)

Well, I can totally understand why the filter would pick up Fawkes. Its all about context. Neopets can use it themselves because the way they are using it, they KNOW it's not being substituted for the other word. However with users, there is no way to know what they mean by it, so it's safer to filter.

And, I know that Lord Nword has already said before that his name is meant to be read as "nword" and not "n word". The "N Word", which I won't actually say, is what people use when referring to a nasty word used to describe black people (which originates from the origins of slavery and isn't really a bad word except for the fact that it was used as a bad word). EDIT: Really though, when you chose that name you MUST have known it would be controversial. If I was them I would have frozen you also. Despite how you want it to be pronounced, that won't stop others from pronouncing it the wrong way and taking offense.
