I remember seeing something like it on an Area 51/Roswell television documentary that I was watching except the symbols were a purple-ish colour on metal instead

Accually, the runes themself come from Jerans sword. If you look at a close up of one of the maracite blades(I think on the TCG card) it is exactly the same writing on one of jerans blades

Maracitite probably in based along rituals of inscribing runes or other symbols of power (which can be traced in some cases back to the cave paintings fuond in Europe among other case) into objects as a form of magic. It just denotes that they are enchanted somehow.
