It's random. Sometimes he'll laugh at jokes that don't make sense at all. Really, it's a matter of luck.

My experience (I have a trophy!) is that it is completely random. Increase your chances by leaving blanks and doing a thorough job of selecting (there's selections all the way up or down on the scrolls)

How does leaving blanks increase your chances?

I suppose it makes it look as if you are really trying and paying attention, rather than just picking random words - which is what you are actually doing ^_~

Totally random, but I have found that leaving blanks really does increase chances.

I just got the avatar for telling a bad joke yesterday, and it was totally random. I just click on random selections; my jokes never make any sense. It seems to be totally random.

I seems random enough. but the king laughed once when i told him a joke that made sense but that might have been luck
