Even though there really isn't a way to be sure that you are really the pet's proper owner, it's just a picture to them, it's a theft to you. I know I'd return the pet, even though I never adopt them, if I did and someone asked for it I'd give it to them.

I think she can be pretty confident that I was the original owner. I neomailed her immediately and explained what happened and told her what the name means in Hawaiian. I even have screenshots of where I was searching for that name in the pound, and another of the quick ref screen with Inoke and my other pets. But she'll never see them because she won't answer me.
I'm like you. I would definitely give it back if the person could offer some evidence that it was theirs. In real life and neopets I really do try to treat people like I want to be treated. I once found a mispriced item for 90 np that was selling for 90K. The kid neomailed me right away -- he must have just been pricing it. I gave it back because he was really new, and obviously very young. I warned him to be careful in the future because he had encountered one of the few neopians who would give something back.
