Avatars... your stand?

Mon Oct 04, 2004 4:05 pm

The avatar craze seems to be overtaking the whole of neopia. People are willing to spend tons of nps just to gain a certain avatar, which only serves a purpose of bragging rights.

I personally do not go out of my way to collect avatars, I seldom visit the neoboards anyway (PPT is much better, tidier and civilised! ;)), and even if I do I never post, so the avatars serve no purpose.

I wonder who shares my sentiments? Or is everyone crazy over avatars? I can understand the thrill of finding out how to acquire a certain avatar, but after getting the thrill of solving a mystery, is it really worth it to splurge tons of nps and lots of time feeding kadoaties to get the avatar? Or buying a faerie queen doll from the hidden tower? Or equipping a petpet which you do not like to your pet for a so and so amount of time?

What do you think?

Personally, I like avatars. I chat on the boards frequently, and I enjoy collecting the avatars because they are generally cheaper than having a gallery. Not to mention that I make a good deal of money off buying avatar items right when the av is released.

i dont go on the neoboards, but i do post on my guild, where your av is also shown, so i quite like having a nice av.

i usually go for the easy (ie page view etc) ones, but won't pay for one unless i really like it (eg i paid to get the mirror for the vira one).

Quanda, I'm kinda more with you on this one ... I mean, on the one hand I do like collecting some of the avatars, they are fun and there's a few I really like.

On the other hand, the super rare/expensive avatars have helped raise inflation tremendously, have contributed to the amount of scamming which was already bad enough, and have just caused stress for all the people who can't afford that MSPP card, FQD, whatever. It definitely is showing the haves/have nots and is helping to perpetuate an almost "caste" system between the rich and not rich/not able to borrow, download, buy whatever's needed for a specific avatar.

So, in general, they're fun, they're mostly cute, it looks kind of cool on your lookup to see how many you have, but the really expensive ones need to be rethought. Just my 2 cents.

Exactly how i feel, only worded better. Avatars are pointless, annoying little pictures that cost hundreds of thousands of millions of neopoints and cause hyperinflation, eg Bag of Peanuts, etc, and the only place you can see them is the neoboards, and to be honest, who really wants to go there. i suppose some people are only doing it for the trophy, or as something to do, like stamp collectors or gallery makers, but i find avatars a complete waste of time and money. You cant even sell them once your finished!!!!! [/rant]

Lets not forget the cocoroller and the space faerie avatars that cost real money ;)

Personally I think its silly to have over 100 if you use only one...
But everyone plays neopets for a reason, and maybe for some people, its collecting (avatars).

Yeah, but I have well over 100, and I like to use a lot of them. ;) I collect avs because it's fun, and they are NOT useless if you go on the neoboards, as I do. Some of the avs are quite pretty, and it's nice to have a goal to work for. People who are so desperate for an av that they'll risk being scammed shouldn't be on neo, being that obsessive about something is bad no matter what the obsession is.

It's fun collecting them -- I like trying to figure out how to get them, and the game ones are great because they take real skill and dedication. I do, however, HATE some of the item ones.

I don't mind the item ones so much when you have to buy a card like Fire Paw or a snorkle snout or something, because those things aren't high rarity and even with the avatar craze they're still less than 100K. I don't even mind the ones with the TCG cards like MSPP and Chokato, because really, what else are you going to use those cards for? What I absolutely hate are avatars like the orange grundo one (where you need to paint a grundo orange to get the av). Because of that stupid avatar, orange PBs -- which were already pretty expensive -- are extremely overpriced to the point where hardly anyone can afford to buy them anymore. I mean, 800K! I have the cash, but there's no way I'd spend it on a colorfill.

TNT should avoid making avs that require useful, already-unbuyable items, because not everyone cares about the avs, and now people who simply wanted to paint their pet orange can't because of the craze.

The only avatar I was interested in keeping wasthe grey faerie one. The others I do not out of my way for. Well unless there's another grey faerie avie

The avatars are just another aspect of the game. I have a love/hate relationship with them. On one hand, I like saying i have x number of avatars and I like using them where I can (on the boards/guilds) and showing how pretty they are. On the other hand, I rarely post and some avatars are way more than I can spend on one thing.

Avatars are both good and bad. They cause inflation of certain items, yes; but on the other hand, some people might be lucky enough to make a huge profit by buying those items early on and then selling them.

I don't collect, though. I really don't care about collecting stuff in general, be it galleries, avatars, stamps, coins, or piles of dung. So avatars are no big deal to me in that sense...though I suppose they do brighten up the neoboards and guild messageboards.

I personally like to collect them.. but even when I get the super expensive ones I tend to use ones I like.. which might be a "click-and-get" one, or a game one.

I collect for my own pleasure.. I rather no one know that I have a lot.. and it's working pretty well since I lurk mostly and post with "non-expensive" avatars..

I guess I'm just a perfectionist that wants everything when I set my mind on it :D

I agree with you. Not many people besides the rich and famous or Borovan himself will be able to get a Super / Seasonal / Whatever Attack Pea and a Pea Chia..

Although sometimes I like the cost because I mkae money once in a while, but mostly loose..

I see people posting this sentiment that "avatars are pointless, and to most people serve no purspose, so why does everybody get so crazy about them?" All the time on forums. What nobody ever mentions is the fact that you can get a trophy for your userlookup if you collect enough. Image

Therefore, I think collecting avatars is just as relevant as playing any flash game. Trophies are good, everybody likes trophies, I certainly do.

However I don't go out of my way to get avatars becauses even if I did I would still be 18 avatars short of getting a third place trophy. There are just to many that are retired or impossible for me to get. If I can't get the trophy then I'm not interested.

I don't personally have much use for them. I'll collect the ones that are easy or the ones that I can buy the items inexpensively and then resell. Things like that. Other than that, I just like to watch out for the new ones so that I can ride ahead of the inflation wave and make a few more neopoints for myself.
