Apparently someone tried training an Eyrie at the Academy too, no avatar.

No, it doesn't have to be an Eyrie, I used a Peophin. Yes, you have to wait until the Course is done, you'll get the avatar once you click on the "Complete Course" button after the time finishes

man, five dubloon coins are expensive! The extra level will give me regeneration or restore which is pretty good

I don't encourage inflation. I don't encourage creating pets to be put to pound later. So if you want to save nps, adopt an eyrie today or until Sunday and bring it for a free training. That could get you the avatar also.
Or if no luck with eyrie, try a pet with an upcoming pet day, I'm sure Cap'n Threelegs would give them free training, too.
