I think for people who are unable to have pets, or if a kid wants to have a pet but doesn't understand what goes into caring for one- a virtual pet is the best way to go. If the kid can't remember to feed their virtual pet, play ith it, etc, it might not be best to let them have a real one.
Dunno. I forget to feed by Neopets from time to time, but my housemate's cat always gets fed on time. I think it's because my Neopets don't walk up to me and stare pointedly when they don't have food, or want their water to be changed, or want to sit in the chair I'm sitting in...
Did that ninetendogs remind anyone else of the various incarnations of
Catz and Dogz? You know, with the little cartoon animals that you could pet and pick up with the mouse, and play with using little virtual toys? I used to have a Catz in college when I couldn't have my own pet. I still have a version on my computer, but now that I have a real cat (well, my housemate has a real cat) I really don't use it.
