I remembered that I did a degree in mathematics for a reason, and so did some calculations
chance of faerie pteri = chance of not changing species * chance of changing colours * number of colours
= about 1 in 220 (assuming the chances given on the IDB site are a true reflection of the lab ray statistics)
Of course this is statistics so I could get what I want tommorrow, or it could be a year from now.
