Even though you have to spend more to train defense and level, wouldn't that still be less than if you only trained using codestones? I mean, if you didn't use the lab ray then you would still have to train level and defense, as well as attack and HP.
Not really, it only works like that if you zap very occasionally in which case it isn't worth the money you pay for it in the first place - so with zapping very occasionally it is worth it if you already have the lab but it isn't worth it if you haven't got the lab yet. And even then it will probably only save you a tiny amount if at all as it depends on the individual lab. If I zap as well as codestone train it takes much longer and I end up retraining to the same level of defense or level over and over again. Plus it raised your HP more often than not which would mean you'd have to keep raising your level which would mean training anything uses more codestones. I used the lab to start with which I thought was saving me money but in the end I ended up paying much more to get to the level of stats I'm out now than if I had codestone trained from the beginning. Much more =(
I got a lab map on my main and have ended up hand painting all my pets as after a year I hadn't got anything I liked. On my second account the same thing happened though it did give me one nice colour that paid its way. And on my third lab... I'm still waiting for that to have paid for itself at all. Really labs are only good for fun and if you fancy the chance of getting a nice painted pet (chances of getting a good colour have seemingly been reduced since a couple of years ago) but if you are going to end up training or painting yourself anyway then it isn't worth it. Mine were fun but they didn't help me achieve any goals, so if you are after fun then it's great. But beware, most good 2 player battlers can spot a labbed battle pet a mile off.
