Subjective viewpoints, my friend. It's really just how you look at it. I read it the same way you did, that it's silly to feel that life is so inevitably useless when we tend to be more scared of what happens when it's over.
The glass is half full, I suppose.

I hate to be blunt, but death happens. Take it from one who knows all too well. My best friend died when I was 16, my mom when I was 19 and then my little sister, who knew me better than anyone in the world, five months later. My dad died about 12 years ago. My grandma, who I was extremely close to, about two years after that. But, honestly, I am not bitter about it. Just made me realize early on that life is short and you had better enjoy it before it is too late.
You have to realize that death is there and then let it go. Or else it will drive you crazy and make you scared and miserable. And, because you never really know what is going to happen in the future, you have to embrace the life that you have got while you have got it. And, embrace your loved ones as well.
And, if you can't do that on your own, you really should find someone in real life to talk to about it. I can't say enough good things about social workers and counseling psychologists. Sometimes, all it takes is having someone hear you.
I know what you're talking about, my dad died three years ago, it wasn't of natural causes, it was for a real stupid reason, I was miserable but I did eventually take from it those same messages(and plenty more too). Have another cookie, oh wait, even better..AN ANIMAL CRACKER!
Signatures can be depressing or happy, inspirational or just more writing on a wall, it's really up to how we percieve it that makes the change for us.
Ryddelboxxer, I dunno if it will cheer you up, but Jen brought up a good point, the grass on one side will always be less green and on the other, more green. Sure it could be better, but it could always be worse too.
