What exactly is wrong with that? All it does is show information you put in yourself on the profile page...

Erm, I'm not suggesting that they've made some sort of underhand gesture to find out my personal information. I'm well aware that I've given them the information myself. However, what I'm saying is that they're sending this information somewhere on every page, and I want to know why.

As people mentioned above, to probably make things work for your account. Like you get certain ads if you're in the US or another country. They can also probably block certain games this way. It's probably something similiar to a "global variables" script of some sort. It's basically something that lists a whole bunch of commonly used variables so that when TNT makes something new, they only have to include that file instead of rewriting that information.

Yeah we recently discovered this at the Neopian Council of War. To quote Inu (an Admin there)

Quote:
As you can tell, they're recording pageviews and basic demographics. That much makes sense. What doesn't? "counter=counter+1000" - they're incrementing the counter by 1k with this. So why would one count by 1000's rather than by 1's? Something to think about...

It's likely that 0 = suspended [or iced, if you will], 1= regular member and 2 = premium member. Then 8 can be administrator or something of the sort, you know.

On the auction and boards I admin we use 1 and 0 to determine whether the account is open or suspended. And since the pages would need to know if you are a premium member or not to determine if it should let you access places like the premium only boards, there's a valid reason for it being there.

Language settings tell the page what language to display in, female or male helps chose what ads to show you, as does country. For example, before I went premium, I got none of the classmates ads or any of the typical US type ads, since it'd be a waste to show them to a Norwegian girl. Age tells the page whether you are allowed to access/do certain things, like neomail, gambling [the combo country = australia and age = 12 would block those pages] and so on.

When I play Brucey B or Black Pawkeet Slots, I get the same type message showing along the top of the game window. It shows the highest paid out to me for that month as well. I have no idea what the "1" is for, but it's been like that for the 1 1/2 yrs. I have been playing.

Well, if you look at the url for all of the games, it sends all of their relevant information on you back to the servers. Not sure about that, but my guess is that it goes towards figuring out the demographics of who plays what games, so that they can determine what kinds of games to put on the development fast track.

As to the information at the bottom of the page, it probably sends a value to ad servers to target which ads you get. My guess is that the information is converted to a numeric value, so that no specific information about you gets forwarded to ad vendors, but users with similar demographic profiles all get similar ads, because their numeric information is similar.

I think it has to do with what ads you're shown...

They gear ads towards your age group and country

This is correct.
Also this would be why I'm being bombarded with laggy adds telling me how easy it is to get a canadian degree in law

edit: the "status=1" doesn't refer to any number of anything, as it rarely does in any code. It's most likely refering to online or offline. status=0 probably meaning offline, which you would never be able to see for obvious reasons.

Or I could be completely wrong.

I got that today for the first time - I'm status 2 as well whatever that means

I have all ads blocked anyway so it won't do them much good figuring out what ads to show me, mwahaha xD Odd that it's showing up occasionally though, perhaps they've just implemented it and are still ironing out the bugs.

What I'm more curious about is the

counter=counter+1000

In programming, a counter is, well, something that counts. It's normally incremented by 1 (like if you're counting how many times something occurs).

Why would a counter be upped by 1000, though?

That is probably neo's user count or page views ;)
