Ok, thanks, never had a combo-locker myself

It's quite a tricky question I think. Firstly, we have to consider whether the numbers are allowed to repeat themselves. Secondly, we need to consider whether we need to multiply the answer by 2, considering that he doesn't know which direction to turn. I feel that there is insufficient information to get the exact answer. As always, some form of assumption is required to get the answer. Hopefully our assumptions are right.

I personally tried out 2 ways, 1 submitted one answer and got a friend to submit the other, hopefully either one of us gets it right.

Btw, some combination locks require u to turn right a number of times before stopping at the first number, then turn right a few times before stopping at the second number, etc... So it can get really confusing... Bottomline, maybe I'm thinking too much, haha

i do believe that since he said that, that it turns it into something even more complicated.. lets assume there are 3 # combination, then you can have something like right-right-right, right-left-right, right-left-left.. and so forth.. so what ever you get.. (for the nPr .. i believe it is a permutation, i need to brush up on permutation vs. combination real quick) .. anyway, what ever you get for the number of varieties, like 0-0-1, 0-1-0, etc.. multiply it by 8 ...

*shrugs* i dunno, as soon as i figure out whether i'm dealing with a combination or permutations i'll be set (yeah, seems too logical that "combination locks" would use "combination method" )

EDIT: The answer I got was also under 3,000 days. But it was over 2,000 days. But I think we need to double that number, because I don't think they would've thrown the information about which way to turn in there for no apparent reason. Ah well, I'm rotten at this anyway.

I don't think that it really true. He may get the answer on the very first try and it would have only taken him 15 seconds (1/5760 days, rounded=0 days).

The real answer to that question is: Because the conundrum is asking you how long it would take for him to try all the combinations! It doesn't care whether he gets the combination right or not.

I don't know about you guys, but my answer was well above 3000 days...... I think the problem is, you have to assume that any number could be used in any one, plus you have to factor it for both 3 and 4 number combos. I hope I'm right, we'll see when they start the new conundrum. (In about 4 weeks )

My answer is very much more than 3000 days. I think that even if we are just to know the combinations alone and not care if it would be turned left or right, 3000 days isn't enough, at least in my computation.

I represented the turning of the knobs as binary, I hope my assumption is correct.

My answer was very much under 3000days. Yes, I got an irrational number and rounded up. My answer was a small fraction of 3000days .

Im pretty sure consecutive numbers dont repeat, and I just wanted to remind everyone that the answer is how many days, not how many combinations. I hope im right

Yeah, but with the new rules, you'll get less neopoints, and the people who worked it all out themselves will get less neopoints.

So you say you're giving out hints because you're a nice person, but you're really only being a nice person to the people who are too lazy to figure it out for themselves, but you're NOT being a nice person to everyone who worked it out on their own!!!

The point of the Lenny conundrum thread here is to give hints and help others figure it out. Not give them the answer straight out, but to help. Which is kinda the reason it's in the Neopets Help board.
