http://www.onlineconversion.com/ is your friend

also, when dealing with lots of conversions, I would make myself a above/below graph thingy... let's see if I can should you...
<table border=0 cellspacing=0 bgcolor=white><tr><td>3 fathoms</td><td bgcolor=black> </td><td>1.8288 meters</td></tr><tr><td colspan=3 bgcolor=black> </td></tr><tr><td></td><td bgcolor=black> </td><td>1 fathom</td></tr></table>
Then you multiply everything on the top, divided by everything on the bottom. Common units (in this case, the fathoms) cancel out and your left with the correct units, hopefully. (which for the puzzle would be 'kip's)
I only use meters as an example... I found a better common unit to convert most of the units to, but I'll let you figure that one out on your own.

P.S. I've already submitted an answer... which I'm 80% certain is correct.

Darn it, I think I have the answer and it's still down for me... and it's almost 3am here and I need sleep.

This probably explains why I'm doing so poorly in physics, but I can't figure out where to factor in the density of the liquid, or if that needs to be considered at all. o_O

Anyone want to volunteer a formula?

I probably did my fast math incorrectly. If this was a test ... I would have double checked my answer. Since it was based on speed ... I just did it once. :)

I'll just cross my fingers. :)

Thank you, thankyou, thankyou, Cranberry, for posting the conundrum when it was available. I answered as soon as I realized the news & LC were back up (after confirming the puzzle hadn't changed in the meantime), so I'm hoping to improve my trophy.

(Even though I never did get my coin along with my 3rd-place LC trophy & av.)

Is there any pattern to the value of the item given in LC (and BTY, for that matter)? Just seems odd that sometimes it's 250 of a kind (new/unique to that particular game), sometimes it's something already existing that's rare & pricey, and sometimes it's relatively common.

I've just started an account for water-based pets, so perhaps I'd put the Eelika with one of them. I suppose I could name it L.C. Or Elsie. Elsie the Eelika.

Edit: Of course, I could be getting ahead of myself, but as long as I was close enough that I rounded in the right direction, I'm pretty sure I got it.

now I just read through this thread ...and realize it came out 1 1/2 hours ago. :( I guess I shouldn't have rushed with my answer and actually double checked it. BAH!

Oh well ... guess I have time to double check after the fact. :)

Glad I could help! I'm not even trying this one, myself -- I'm terrible at math. I showed a non-Neopets-playing friend the problem and he's figuring it out, so maybe he'll tell me the answer. ;)

Xena, it initially came out a while ago, but then went back down for an hour or so. So you're still among the first.

Don't worry about density per-se . . . think of it as weight per volume, since the kips are a measure of weight.

On the contrary, I feel it isn't too difficult, it only requires basic math. It's the conversions which are so confusing... especially if you don't use the US system of measurement.
