Yes it is. What's really curious (And more important than the status) is the fact that for every page that is viewed the pageviews increase by 1000

A little false advertising on Neo's behalf ??

That would mean 20~ real pageviews every 5-6 seconds? Not very realistic. That counter could maybe be cumulative. (meaning it's oddly the 1000th page you have loaded that day)...or not.

Kudos to wonder weezel for making me this cute set. ^_^

To my knowledge the coding that is there means that every page you visit adds 1000 to their counter. And considering that each time I see it it is there I tend to believe they're inflating their numbers

Actually, that's quite interesting.... look at the number of pageviews on th bottom of the Pet Central Page:
http://www.neopets.com/petcentral.phtml if you're lazy.

This is really interesting. The counter never shows any numbers other than 0 on the last 3 (or 4) digits of the pageview counter. Me smells something illegalish here

or else it could be a few extra zeroes like in the wom times, you know? the number of seconds and then zeros at the end?

my new theory is that the status thing has to do with your browser. maybe?

That's what I was thinking...the glitched text doesn't show up very often and it looks like it's showing up when it's not supposed to and not actually doing its job. Maybe. Either that or the counter has nothing to do with pageviews and is just to do with assigning you a number for some other information gathering.

Anyways, with regard to how many page views neopets says it is getting, it makes far more sense to only update the number at nice round figures as otherwise it would be changing number several times a second! And that's way too much like hard work x)

Could status be which sidebar you're using? Or possibly your permission status, like maybe if you're under 13 and don't have a signed permission form?

The counter thing is interesting.

I want to see my status!

Do you believe neo's page views/user count is correct? Come on, people. Refresh the petpage. You'll see the count go up by ~20-100 per refresh. Which is highly unrealistic.

The count seems to go up by a few tens of thousands for me at the moment - I think that's completely realistic given the number of users signed up to the website. There are probably at least a million users on at most times of the day throughout the world so the pageviews will increase hugely every second.

Isn't neopets one of the most popular webistes on the internet? The number of get requests it gets a second must be through the roof :o

Hmm. Neopets have a LOT of unfrozen accounts, but many, many thousands of them are inactive. Perhaps in order to convince the sponsors that the number of "users" (ie accounts) they have is correct, they inflate the pageviews correspondingly?

Ooh.. that was unusually cynical of me.

Maybe the counter could also have to do with random events? Something has to track when you get one. Maybe that helps to record when your next one should be triggered?

If the pageviews increase by 1000 each time, that's unbelievably unrealistic also. At the moment, that would mean only 234,019,670 pageviews. That would also mean every owner would only have an averge of about 2.5 pageviews. :o I think it's just rounded somehow

The page views counter has always confused me a little, since I'm not sure which pages they are counting. Are they only counting the frontpage, or are they counting every single page on the site?

If they are counting every page on the entire site, then it going up by thousands every second wouldn't be that far-fetched.

To me, the code looks like it is checking to see if you updated your profile or anything, and it sends the updated data, or if you didn't change it, the same data into the table in the database.

They probably measure hits, page views and user sessions - hits being the total number of files (including media, graphics etc) requested from the server, page views counting the visits for every single page of the site, and user sessions being how many people visit the site as a whole, not every single page they view (eg through counting unique IPs or logging username info). The latter is quite hard to measure and doesn't show how popular the site is, it would register the same as for a site that the same number of people go to but only spend a minute on. Hits on the other hand would give to high a reading given how many images there are all over the site.

They probably chose to display page views as that is arguably the more accurate measurement of how popular the site is, which for neopets is, hmmm, roughly... "very" :D
