kinda gotta disagree with you that real life pets are "gender neutral" not onyl for obvious reasons but their personalities generally, not always, are different as well

What you've also got to remember is. That some people don't like gender definition anyway. I like them to be neutral... One of my pets is a tranny :P

I agree. I'd be very dissapointed if neo started defining pets by gender. (I would actualy probably quit) Honestly It annoys me that they'ed even made the distinctions that they have.

I understand the desier to do so for those pets that have clothes -- although i don't approve. (I would have allowed people painting with say a royal paintbrush to choose the look they wanted for their pet or better yet have two seperate paintbrushes for royalboy and royalgirl) But doing something like that to the poor innocent regular painted pets is just silly. It would add an annoying element to the site. Seriously there's no way to realy differentiate between the genders of most of the pets without reverting to steriotyping, and probably sexist ( not to mention ugly)steriotyping at that.

*Sigh* if there's realy that much of a problem with the usul I agree with hollypop that it needs a revamp anyway. Then it can be more gender neutral like pets should be.

Also I'm sick to death about people complaining about male pink pets. I know plenty of guys who wear pink. It's not some strange ailen thing. And it's not even as if the pets have ANY feminine touches they're just a flat fill colour *wanders off muttering to herself*

I totally agree. A creature's (human's) character is not defined by gender, but society, commercials and stereotypes.

CHARACTERISTICS are, though. Girl humans, for example, are generally smaller, shorter and have different shaped jawbones, none of which are results of society or stereotype. These traits are due to GENETICS. Donna (I hope) means just adding these non-stereotypical traits to pets; genetic differences between male and female pets rather than society's differences.

Imo, girls and boys are different, and not just by society, commercials, and stereotypes. Hormones, for instance, make us totally different. Plus our minds are just stuctured differently ^^ Why do you think barbies don't appeal to boys but appeal to girls? You can't really believe it's all society's fault, can you?

You really have a tranny pet? Lol. RHPF anyone?

Of course genders are biologically different, but not totally, as you say. Most of the hormones are quite the same for different genders. We eat and sleep and need mostly the same things.
YES, a person's personality is defined by genetics and environment/society. When it comes to Barbies I personally (as a girl) hated them, I wasn't taught to like clothes or make-up or anything neither by parents nor friends nor TV (we didn't have any). If some boysd like barbie dolls on the other hand they will be laughed at beacuse "it's not normal" in our society. Thats why you don't see many boys with dolls and girls with robots.

I think maybe sometimes they'd need eyelashes and stuff though, because taking the Royal Moehog as an example, to me it looks like a male pet in a dress!!

I've had a look round and here are what I think are some of the better-done gender specific pets:

And some of the scarier ones:

Hmm.. seems they get it wrong more often than they get it right o_O

It is a good idea actually - it'd have to be gender specific though ;) These are the ones that exist so far (I'm including the Defenders of Neopia people):

Some traits such as bone stucture are genetic. But in the animal kingdom (As neopets are pretty much animals) Most animals bar certain kinds such as lions some birds and a few others don't have any particularly defining traits as humans can. (I say can because it isn't allways so. Not all of us as so "defined" shall we say...) The obvious diferences aren't shown in a kids site so don't start that either!

Oh and please please. Don't base the "Barbies don't apeal to boys" on anything at all. I know a lot of boys who actually liked barbie. You just wouldn't want to admitt it due to society. Would you want to be beaten up for being too fem? Nooo... Just play with your sisters when she's out and say no more!
I think our brains are practicly the same aside for a few little details, that don't really come into play here anyway. Since many girls like thrash metal and motor bikes... Then some boys like eyeliner and flowers... Thats the beauty of us.

Aye. I indeed do have a TV pet (No telling which. Just look out for him in the BC some day... He's a pretty boy). Though I am not so familiar with some of the net acronyms so would someone kindly fill me in on what "RHPF" means? Or was that a Rocky Horror reference? (Great show btw!)

I agree with most in here. I think they should be neutral myself. Maybe exept maybe for the usuki and royal... If we seriously don't like it we can allways draw what we see our pet to be looking like anyway. I know I do... ;)
Although a male usuki with that funky hair would be pretty cool.

I think we need some male faeries next... Ones with long hair riding peophins with wings! :D

Being a tranny myself, there was quite a bit I wanted to say... but looks like everybody else done gone 'n beat me to it.

So the only thing else I have to say is... androgyny rocks! :D Though I'd being lying if I said the pink male Usul with eye liner and fluffy bow wasn't pleasing to the eye.

Pink Peophins! (Or Unis)--- Anyway, I sent a question to the Neopian Times Edtorial many months ago asking about creating some male faeries. Of course, as I expected, it didn't appear in the editorial. I'd love to see a gray or dark male faerie.

Try this quiz, "He-Cat or She-Cat"

A Strange Potion will do that, I believe.

I got 11 out of 16.

Along with the faces, you can also tell by the shape of the whole cat. Female cats tend to be slimmer, and male cats are a lot buffer.

They could just draw the basic pet pose and then just add a little bit to differentiate males from females... its not really that much work. <stop=now> rant about how TNT wont do any extra work that doesnt give them profit </stop>

Not all pets need to be male or female. Most are fine being unisex. Though some with bows or other items should be changed to fit their gender
