Um, the name of the site is NEOPETS. It's a friggin' cartoon site for kids of all ages.

If you don't like cute, then I suggest you not play Neopets. Instead you should play Doom or Quake which are more suited for your non-cute needs..

Excuse me? Noone said they wanted neopets to be R-rated or anything. You're acting very hostile and fussy. I dislike cute and I find plenty of things to like on neopets, but you want to know something? Pokemon is also an innocent, cartoonish kid's game and it has FAR less cutesypoo stuff than neopets! More than half of the 386 pokemon range from totally "serious" looking to outright creepy. That doesn't make it anything like doom or quake. The fact remains that when neopets DID have completely scary pets they were eventually taken away, replaced with intentionally cuter things. You really think that's fair?

Darigan isn't worth mentioning when the brush costs that much. I would perhaps be able to afford one if you added together all the np I've ever made in my entire four years of playing. Perhaps.

And am I the only one who remembers the "razor whip" weapon being changed to the "feather tickler", and the "chainclaw" changed to "lucky robot's foot?" And what's with all the axes being made of rubber?

I agree with you, VirtualMetal, my parents don't really care what I do on the computer. My dad's doing his morning exercises right behind me NOW and doesn't even care what I'm doing! They just want me to stop bugging them.

To be honest. What would a little girl of 5 be doing on neopets unsupervised anyway? Parents need to stop thinking that the internet is like an interactive TV.

I think a lot of websites are looked on by parents as a nanny for their kids. As a result the rules *Waves fist at ENT* are ridiculous and petty. But thats another storey eh.

I agree with you, VirtualMetal, too many parents do use the internet as a babysitter. But, being a parent, myself, it is nice to know that the site is "relatively" safe for my 11 year old daughter. Although, for the most part, she is supervised while playing the internet, I can't be hovering over her every second that she is on the computer.

However, I think that she has seen more bad stuff on the TV news to scare her (such as the school massacre in Russia) than she could ever find on Neopets--even before all of the cutesy revamps.

Bottom line: "Cute" attracts kids to this site. "Cute," in turn, causes Neopets to be looked upon as a "safe" site. Parents feel comfortable letting their kids play the site--whether they are supervised or not supervised. And, because the site is supposedly so safe and kid-friendly, sponsors feel comfortable giving their money to this site.

So, in essence, because these kids are looking at all of the immersive advertising and getting mommy and daddy to buy the advertised stuff for them, those kids keep the site going. No sponsors = no site. At least, no free site.

So, until someone can convince Neopets (and the public) that there are a lot of teens/adults who play and, even more so, convince them that we would actually look at the advertising (I know I don't even see it anymore), we will have to put up with cute--or leave. Personally, the cute stuff doesn't bother me in the least.

You're closer to the truth than you know. Adam's mother (I believe) suggested the name Coochy-Coo. I really liked her other idea though- Varmints!

WooHoo! Another 23-year-old/person over the age of 20... maybe we should start an over-20s thread to compete with the children and the teenagers :P

HeHe. Just kidding, guys. Don't jump on me and pound me into little pieces.

Anyway... like plenty of people have said, I think people are looking at it the wrong way. The site isn't cute, it's cartoony. And the thing about cartoons is that they can be both cute (the Care Bears) and not-so-cute (South Park).

That being said, it's true that the majority of basic pets are a little on the cute side (not that I have any qualms about it), but you also have to remember that those pets are the most visible element of the site. They're what attracts newcomers to the site, and for the most part, those newcomers are going to be people under the age of 16.

However, once you get inside the site, you realise that it's not all Care Bear cute. There's (as people have pointed out) the battledome, the various non-cute paintbrushes, the Haunted Woods and Abandoned Fairground, Darigan's Citadel, and various wars, villains and monsters. There's also several non-cute petpets out there - the Zomutt, Droolix, Ganuthor, Krikket, Cyodrake, and plenty of others.

Also, like Morningstar pointed out, there are plenty of cartoons out there that operate on two different levels. They appeal visually to younger people, yet have humour that only older people will get. And, strangely enough, one of the best examples of thise comes from one Neopets' biggest sponsors: Disney. Look at almost any of their later movies and you'll find plenty of jokes that are bound to go over the heads of children - the drag queen jokes in The Lion King, for example (I can't think of any others off the top of my head). Then of course there's Shrek, Ice Age, Finding Nemo...

So, my point is, that just because something looks "cute" it doesn't mean that it can't be enjoyed by people of all ages, because scratch the surface and you'll find there's a lot more to it.

Pokemon isn't neopets.

Would you really like your kids, or young relitives, to go onto a site with whips, chainsaws and axes? I don't think so. Parents would stop their children going on neopets and neopets would lose a large portion of it's members.

You're right, they have put some effort into into making the content not all fluff and lollipops, but the images really need to move that way too. Sure, things like neoquest and the battledome are fun and not aimed at wittle bitty babies, but it's difficult to get someone to even try playing them when, upon arrival at the site, they are greeted with cutesy wootsy images shoved in their face.

I agree. Even though some of the stories, plots, and whatever else isn't generally considered suitable for very young children, the pictures are still cute. I'd hug and kiss the Wockey Beast mentioned above.
So, the Brain Tree asks for the dates of dead people? It would be a bit more "morbid and scary" if the Brain Tree actually LOOKED different. Not like some cute tree thing.
But then again, maybe I am just really used to violence and gore and whatnot, that these Brain Tree and Wocky Beast things don't bother me. Who knows, they might be horribly disturbing to people, and they might even give some kids nightmares.
But I'm not one of them.

Doom and Quake certainly aren't cute. (Though that Pinky(?) dog thing in Doom III is close to cute;p) But they aren't really scary either.

Most of the evil stuff on Neopets is words. No images, just words.
And words do nothing for me. Someone can write a really good book telling me lots of gruesome ways to do awful things. I'd rather see a movie that does the same, but with pictures, video, and sound.

You just totally missed my point. I wasn't comparing them, I was saying that being "for kids" does not mean there can't be some serious-looking stuff, and my more important point is that there USED to be. There was no reason to water it down.

Oh please, that's ridiculous. Yes, I would let young relatives play a site with cartoon pictures of whips and axes. Who in their right mind would be offended? ALL young children that I know of are allowed to play with action figures and videogames full of such weapons as well as handguns and bombs. They're in Daffy Duck cartoons for pete's sake. It's not like you actually see neopets hacking into eachother, and you shouldn't...I'm not saying there should be actual violence, just that cencoring existing weapons is nonsensical and a little bit insulting. Why are other weapons allowed to be real? The only reason the swords aren't all made of rubber is because swords are just so insanely popular and very firmly rooted in media for all ages. Doesn't mean they're for hacking flesh any less than an axe is, though.

I, too, am insensitive to horror. I've spent my whole life utterly obsessed with monsters.

HOWEVER, I feel a lot differently here. I think the Braintree looks AWESOME, and perfectly creepy in the world of neopets. Heck, it would be creepy in an actual horror movie. A pulsing fleshy brain growing in the woods for no readily apparent reason isn't eerie enough for ya?

Course, "eerie" is the key word. I think weird things are a lot more effective than threatening or gory things. Blood isn't scary, and while a lion bearing down on you may be scary, it's not creepy. If you're saying the braintree would be better with a demon face or something, no. That's lame. The little moaning ghost face is perfect, esspecially on the new haunted woods map.

Anyways, all I'm saying in this thread is that I want some neopets as bizarre as the old, deleted mutants. They are what got me into the site (even though I had an account for a year or two prior), and they're still some of my favorite creatures/characters from anything. The old mutant chia is still probably my second or third favorite game/cartoon creature EVER. It's not fair to completely remove or change something from the entire game just because some kids find it too "ugly". We have petpets that weird, and villains and stuff, but no actual neopets. I don't think that's an unreasonable thing for me to want. Heck, if they had drawn those mutants cuter and cartoonier without completely changing their concepts, I'dve been satisfied.
