...never return?

They can't get their accounts activated?
They find the site too confusing?
They just wanted to create some other pets?
They just wanted to be a different username for a bit?
They just wanted to inflate a referral stat?
The members are not fun enough?
The games are not fun enough?
Too many restrictions (getting blocked, warned, frozen, etc.)?

What reasons can you come up with?

To help a friend with the referral program.
Or maybe they just don't like it.

Most people I think sign up, play a few games, wander around some, then they simply forget about it.

I have several friends who used to play 2-3 or even 4 years ago, who only remember when I start babbling about it randomly and then they locate their username and password and voila, 52 month old account with a few map pieces, rare neggs and paint brushes. Then I have to be all guru and tell them what to sell and what not to do, like complete any of the maps, hah.

I played it a lot when I first signed up, and then forgot about it after a while due to school, boyfriend, etc., I remembered after a few months though, and started playing again.

Some people might sign up and then not come back because of ads, they get tired of the games, decide to play other games (like MMORPGs).

Use as storage but seldom got anything to store. I visited my second account like once in two to three months.

Just created an account to "see what it is like". Given the fame Neopets has I believe many people create an account, realise that it is nothing much/too confusing for them, and leave.

A few of my friends created accounts because I told them the site was fun. They played a few games and then forgot about it. That's probably the most common reason for people abandoning accounts. I actually did that myself -- I created my account four and a half years ago when I had a boring summer job that allowed me to use computers a lot, played games all summer, then forgot about the site for a year or so. I started playing again later.

As a newbie (I joined about 6 months after the site started) one of my friends kept talking about how if you make lots of accounts you could earn more money, buy more items and then send them to your one main account. This resulted in my making a lot of "mark_23435151" accounts. Aah, we thought we were so genius and that no one would have thought of it! And then I discovered the referral program, and well... yes.

Now, of course, I realize how probably everyone did that and of course, it was really wrong to do. But that was when the only games were Badeek Seek and Guess the Card (where you could win money AND raise your pets happiness).

Anyway, those accounts were probably all cleaned. I had so many, I would loose track of them right away.

I recommended the site to lots of my friends. Some of them signed up, but thought it was boring after a while.

Well, first, I think people's tastes/interests change. If the game doesn't "hook" you during the time that you are playing it, most likely you will quit playing and attempt to find something that does "hook" you. Or, if something more important than Neo comes along in your life, a person has to decide between the two--like a new job, a boy/girl friend, etc.

Second, not everyone is good at this game. Personally, I think people stay only if they realize that are are good at some aspect of the game--restocking, reselling, games, collecting, stock market, chatting, etc. If a person eventually comes to the realization that they stink at the game, my guess is that they quit and find something they are good at.

Third, the game is extremely confusing to a new person. And, unless you have the patience to stick it out and learn the game or have someone (family member, PPT forums) to teach you the ins and outs, it can be very frustrating. I lucked out and had both family members and these forums. I have said many times that if it weren't for PPT, I wouldn't still be playing. Unfortunately, most people don't even realize that there are Neo-fansites devoted to helping people learn the game.

Fourth, a lot of people have been unfairly frozen. My guess is that most of them throw their hands up in the air in disgust and never return. It is really hard to devote your time and energy to the game, only to get accused of some wrongdoing, when you know deep down in your heart you did absolutely nothing wrong. The diehard players may or may not return--depending on how "hooked" they were prior to the freezing.

Finally, and I really think this is a very important reason, there have been countless major glitches in the past two years--the TP glitch, the 4/4 password glitch, the recent SDB glitch, shops disappearing, accounts being rolled back. Lots of people left because of them--particularly when Neopets had the strict policy of "no compensation." If I had been a new person when any of these glitches had occurred and had lost everything, I probably would have quit. In fact, I did quit for a few weeks after the TP glitch took 50% of my nps away from me. But, I was too addicted to stay away for good.

I forgot the whole "OH MY GOODNESS! I am poor and have nothing compared to *Insert Username here* and will never be able to afford one of those items." Also there is the "My Gallery, submission, pets, *Insert Other Such* really really sucks compare to *Insert Username here*."

I guess the word of the day is : Disheartened.
