There was the magical propaganda game a while back which i was ok with. This however, seems to be crossing the line for me.

Take a gander at this bad boy.

Greeeeaaaaaat. Nothing says innocent kids site like encouraging them to join the national service.

I realize that this is a business and the primary mission here is to make money, but there are certain boundaries that shouldn't be crossed.

Found the site through NNN.

SNak Edit: Fixed the stretch. If the picture is going to stretch the forums, please make it a link instead (or crop the photo).

coming2 Edit: Should be magically fixed now. 8)

Personally, I think its in bad taste of them to even CONSIDER doing something like this. I have met soldiers serving in places like Iraq and they say that you don't know how horrible war is until you're staring down the sight of a rifle. I'm fine with the immersive advertising as long as its to a degree, but you're right. They've really pressed a button that shouldn't have been pressed. Ever.

If it's "whether you like it or not" then why are they spending so much money making sure that children grow up thinking they like it?

I don't think they mean that "whether you like it or not" is part of the military's motto, just their own personal opinion. It's not as if the military hasn't been recruiting in American schools for years. Americans have a choice, and they don't. So it's quite likely that they try to do as much as they can to make service a seem like a positive part of life. I know virtually nothing about what it's like living in Singapore, but it just doesn't seem so bizzarre for a country that requires mandatory service and one that is headquarters for Neopets Asian offices.

Their probaly afraid that North Korea or China is going to invade them :P

That was a bit immature, §hark. Granted, I don't think its a good advertising scheme, but still, thats probably offensive to Singapore users

I just don't enjoy the fact that a children's website is being financially supported by two armed forces.

Image

I mean, come on now. That's like Sesame Street being presented as half educational/half recruitment video.

"Today's episode was brought to you by the letters A-K and the number 47."

SNak Edit: Fixed the stretch. If the picture is going to stretch the forums, please make it a link instead (or crop the photo). (Just Repeating myself) :P

coming2 Edit: Made it pretty again. Thanks!

I agree here. I understand it's a mandatory service in Singapore, but it has no place on a website primarily for children. There are alot of iffy ads on neopets; ads like, "Does your job suck?", and "Who's going to get pregnant first?", and the Navy ads are right up there with them. My opinion is this; if you're not going to allow neoboard topics on a subject, don't show an ad for it on the next page.

Hey all.. I'm Singaporean n take no offense to the remarks, but just felt the need to clarify this whole miw website issue. My bf actually went thru NS and this website is basically to facilitate admin procedures for them as well as to keep them updated on stuff... Not exactly about promoting the military. IMO, I think the objective in advertising this is mainly for facilitation of admin work such as applying to leave the country while serving national service since most NS guys r prob too lazy to do so hehe :) They prob just want to cut down the amt of paperwork by promoting e-applications and such...

Well, well, look at the different ways they managed to come up with to spread propaganda.

No offence to Singaporeans, I stay in Singapore and even my Singaporean friends agree that the government gets overboard with "National Education". While what they teach is normally alright, it gets annoying.
