Neopets is getting WAY to cutsey and perfect. There is almost NOTHING morbid and non-cutsey on the site. What WAS morbid and non-cutsey has been archived (like Sacrificers and the Ski Lodge thingy) I mean, look at the pets! They're better drawn than the old verions, but much too cutsey and cuddly. Even the Grarrl! (the old one was much better.) And the faerie paintbrushes....yeccch. :x If I joined today and took a look at the site and the pets, I'd think it was meant for 6 year old girls. They might as well rename it Cutsey widdle pinky poo poo Pets. I know I need to get a life. I know I need to get a thesarus. I know I need to shut up and deal because the site is FREE. I'm just voicing my opinion.
*gets off soapbox*

I kind of agree with you, but there are exceptions. The Mutant Draik, for example, has a cracked skull and part of its brain sticking out. There's a NeoGreeting with blood in it.

However, you have to remember that this is sort of geared toward young people. And there are really only 2 "cute" paintbrushes: Faerie and Baby. But you have to expect that.

While I do believe that there are some parts of the site that are just a little too cute, they do have some more serious parts. I kind of doubt that a 6 year old girl could beat neoquest II or become a successful battledomer. Also, just about all of the mutant pets are just hideous and the dung items aren't exactly cute. Don't get too worried. It'll be alright.

I really do agree. They need to stop underestimating what the minds of young children can take. I mean, nowadays most 10-year-old kids already have a whole vocabulary of vulgarities, plus they see sexual and violent scenes everyday. Of course, there are exceptions, but making the site too squeaky clean and cutesome will put off many of Neopets "clients", which includes teens and adults.

*sigh*

why do people hate "cute" so much? i seriously, seriously don't get it.

it is, honestly, a KIDS' GAME. while i do agree that this paranoia about squeaky-cleanliness has gotten out of hand, what's the big freaking deal about cuteness?

*huge sigh*

Its cartoony. Not cute.

And about the Faerie paint brush, you guys have your cool guy brushes too. Like Mutant and Halloween.

And just because I like the cute pets does that make me a six year old girl when I'm actually double that age?

I'd agree full heartedly...if it weren't for the fact #2 kougra won. No I'm still not angry about that (geez, heck no) but what I got from that was that no matter how much we complain about neopets getting to cutesy, the majority of the players on neopets actually prefer cute. I don't like it either, but TNT has to go with what the majority wants.

Eheheheheh, I watched South Park when I was six, so if I was that young and joined Neopets, I wouldn't mind any bloody or violent stuff... ^_^;

Unfortunately, the sponsors that seem to be interested in Neopets cater to kids--Disney and McD's. The stores that sell Neopets stuff cater to kids--Toys R Us, Claire's, Limited Too. We adults don't play TCG (except when I was forced to during the Mall Tour) and most of us don't collect the IRL plushies. So, Neopets is geared toward the younger set.

I honestly don't think the corporate suits at Neopets realize the huge teen and adult following that Neopets has--and that the teens/adults are people who are more likely to stay for the long haul and more likely to invest huge blocks of time into the game--unlike the kids that get bored and move onto another game like Gaia or Animal Crossing. I have heard that the fastest growing section of internet game players is adult women--like me--who finish the housework early (or simply don't do it) and spend their mornings or afternoons playing Neopets before the kids come home from school.

Either that or Neopets simply can't convince potential advertisers that mature people play this game (we are kind of closet players, you know). Otherwise, we'd have Jeep Cherokee and Starbuck's ads replacing the Disney ads in a heartbeat.

But the kiddy ads and toys keep the site free, so I suggest that you just do what I do--ignore the kid-oriented stuff and keep playing the game.

Oh, and by the way, there is nothing wrong with cute. I collect plushies and have one of the biggest plushies galleries in Neopia right now. Most of those plushies are "cute." The site could be much worse, as far as "cuteness" goes--anyone remember those Cabbage Patch Dolls or the resurgence of the CareBears?

a brief list of things off the top of my head that are rather morbid and/or non-cutesy:
-the brain tree asking for dates and places of someone's death
-a shriveled, withered darigan before his return to power
-war machines
-snot and dung paint brushes (i am not an easily offended person, but these made even me raise my eyebrows)
-blumaroo steaks, octorpie, and other foods made out of pets and petpets
-enslavement of a species
-wings being ripped from faeries
-the freaky freaky freaky esophagor AAAGH!
-the creepy-as-all-get-out carnival of terror area
-mutant pets (the BLUMAROO! ack!)
-tyrannian pets
-buzzes

even the fact that there's a battledome. fighting is not cute or girly.

i think you're not paying close attention. there's a great mixture of stuff on neopets; that's why i play. so there's been a few cuter revamps lately. you still don't have to look very far for un-cuteness.

and i still don't get why you're so against cuteness anyway.

An idea I had with the sponsers is that people with accounts set for a higher age group would get different ads. not drastically different, but maybe there'd be less Disney and more...something 13-17 and 17+ would care about more (like Starbucks and cars). I can pick out various flaws that could occur in this, but it's a good idea in my opinion.
