No, it doesn't have to be an Eyrie, I used a Peophin. Yes, you have to wait until the Course is done, you'll get the avatar once you click on the "Complete Course" button after the time finishes :)

I don't encourage inflation. I don't encourage creating pets to be put to pound later. So if you want to save nps, adopt an eyrie today or until Sunday and bring it for a free training. That could get you the avatar also.

Or if no luck with eyrie, try a pet with an upcoming pet day, I'm sure Cap'n Threelegs would give them free training, too. :)
