Anyone here read The Giver By Lois Lowry? I love it. I have read it 5+ times.

THe giver is an amazingly complex read. It's amazing how she got the idea. I love that book. I've read it 11 times. XD

I think the first time I read that book was in about fourth grade. It's always been one of my favorites. I tend to read it about once a year, but it's not to the point that my copy is falling apart. I need to invest in a new one.

I was given it as a "Reading Award" in fourth grade, began it, and lost it. Then my Mum read it to my little brother and sister (they must have been 6 or 7...I listened too) and it was fantastic. I read it again for fun. Then I was forced to read it in 6th grade, and I haven't read it since.

It's a very good book, but for some reson, I just don't like it. The ending just.... ends it. 
Though, the sequel to it, Gathering Blue, was really nice.

I loved that book. Then I had to read it in 7th grade and I've hated it ever since. x.x

*blink* There's a sequel?
I'm pretty sure I've read this.. is this the one where Jonah (I think) is given a gift of memories, and there's no colour in the world?

The Giver is a great book, although I wouldn't put it on my "favorites of all times" list. I did love it, though.
I also didn't like the ending - it seemed to me as if it was written in a rush. The style wasn't nearly as sophisticated and there was a bit of a plothole.
Gathering Blue's good as well. It's not really a sequel though, considering it's set in a different place/time with different characters. Similar concept, though.

<u>The Giver</u> is one of my favourite books. It so deserved the Newberry Award. :D
I've read it over and over again, and it amazes me how Lowry was able to think through all of this, create an entire future society, and not make it cliché in the least- instead of making things 'futuristic', she instead painted a picture about a world where technology has decreased, where people are more or less imprisoned in perfection and stripped of all emotion- not having it taken away, but never being taught what love is, what hate is, or even what true happiness feels like.
And the Giver... Wow. Lowry hit the character jackpot there. I mean, come on. A character who is the only human (as far as we know) who remembers, who has been given and passes on memories of the past, of what things used to be. Who teaches his apprentice how to feel, to love, and to hate. He's the only one who knows that what everyone is doing is <u>wrong</u>.

The sequal is good too. Gathering Blue was great! ^^ There's also a newer one, which I thought was the best of all three books.
EDIT: The sequel is "The Messenger". It's more of a sequel to Gathering Blue than the Giver. God, it was a great book.
