I've never heard anything in regards to microwaving a vase of roses...
What happens? Or doesn't happen?

I know people microwave roses (without the vase though...) to dry them for pressing or just to keep them looking pretty before they have a chance to die. Maybe Shapu's secret hobby is pressing flowers. ;)

Or irreparably damaging vases?

Sounds like a cool hobby to me, at any rate.

Actually, I've never done it. I imagine it's a bad idea, since most vases aren't microwave-safe.

I'd go do it... And I'd film it for your amusement.
But I am reasonably certain my mother would kill me if I broke the Microwave.

Still...

The best way to press flowers is with a toaster. Really. Sandwich the flower carefully between some paper towels or filter paper, stack a few books on top on a hard surface and wait a while. After it is pressed to your satisfaction, use a toaster to dry it out completely.

The reason flowers need to be pressed is so that the water can be removed (preventing mildew and wilting) without destroying the pigments in the flower. Microwaves and heat in general will do that, so the more water can be pressed or absorbed out initially, the better.
