Which might be because TNT doesn't think the under 13s are mature enough not to put silly things in the wishlist box and shop descriptions eg. chain letters or swear words.

As far as age<13 is concerend, it's not a matter of maturity. Its a matter of legality.

With COPPA, they've got to set limits, and if the parent sends in the form, then they child can use the site, but it's up to the website to decide how much.

Is it a pain? Yes, I work at a LOTR website, and this COPPA stuff caused us a huge pain.

If you don't like it, and you live in the USA, write to your congressmen about it (COPPA)

It's not nice to lie about your age, not only is it not right, but you waive your online rights to do anything about it (that is, if you are under 13 and try to raise a stink about something).

So you can't get/play a collection of pixels....big deal, wait a few years, and then get it. It'll be all the more sweeter .

I think it is a legality issue - the age requirements for having a COPPA site.

Many sites do have age restrictions. I know of at least one image hosting site where the minimum age to have an account and/or post on the help forum is 16. Does that mean people abide by that? No. Should they? Yes. Why? For legal reasons, to abide by the TOS of that site and to keep lawyers away from the owner when someone lies about their age and either uploads or views inappropriate materials (which do get pulled on the hosting site I'm talking about).

The same holds true for Neopets or any other site that has a Terms of Use, is COPPA compliant. The age restrictions/requirements are there for a good reason. To protect the site/company, yes. But also to protect all of us.

That really stinks for an one 13 or younger. But it is all legal, and behind that there is money. Neopets doesn't want to get sued. I'm happy I'm over 13, but I feel sorry for all of you younger people out there

I really don't see what COPPA were thinking, when they made these age restriction crap. I mean, how hard is it to honestly lie about your age. I mean, there are sites like Newgrounds.com, and my little 8 year old neighbor (sp?) visits it reguarly!

Well, I'm 14 so I've got nothing to worry about, but I honestly feel sorry for all those under 13 year olds, who are generally mature enough to play these games without having a sudden compulsion to spend their lunch money on slot machines or something.

In fact, I believe that the gambling games were a good asset to the site, especially for young kids, becasue it teaches them taht by betting money, you don't always win. I learned myself that after blowing 20k on the Brucy B Slots

But I guess that TNT can't really help that. They are a growing business, and legality can become an issue sometimes.

A bit off topic now, but the one thing that annoys me is how Neopets is so kiddie friendly, even to teenagers and adults. Anybody over 13 should have certain restrictions (such as saying a few bad words in neomail) taken away. Maybe even a special less-monitored neoboard for over 15s, who can handle religious or political topics.

And if a kid lies about their age, then that's their problem, and the mother can't sue Neo becasue her kid stated that he was over 13.

Neo has got to start catering for the older generations IMO, and not just by releasing new Lenny Condundrums.

teh0mega, I agree actually with everyone who believes that if a parent gives permission, that the under 13 year olds should be allowed to play the games. I do think they would be a good teaching tool on how to not get carried away "gambling". But I don't know that something like a permission form would be feasible in this type of case. I'm not a lawyer *shrug* ... am thinking of all the mess it must have been to set this up when the site just had a huge downtime.

As far as leaning too far in the direction of "kiddie friendly", I agree with that too in a way. I still don't think politics or religion should be discussed on the site. Those 2 subjects almost always cause problems, no matter where they're discussed. It would be nice to have a separate board area or something for us older players (I'm talking 18 and up) needing a special verification of some sort to enter that board. Considering that I read (don't remember where) the largest influx of newer members were women 30 and up, I think this would be a good thing. Also considering it's us older players who have the money to buy the bulk of the merchandise and are the target of so many of those (horrible) banner ads.

I can handle that stuff just fine, thank you very much. I think neopets is too kiddie friendly in the aspect that they seem to think a bads word or mention of a religion is going to scar some kid for life.


The thing is, that ide ais only good in aspect. If hormonal 13 year olds heard about this board, they might assume that that was a place where you could talk dirty and say dirty or racy things.
Thats why it would just cause more younger people to sign up as 18+

I don't see how Neopets disabling the gambling section is going to deter any young 'uns from gambling, especially since some of the games are common card games that do get taught and played. o.0 I know for a fact that a kid cannot play a real slot machine at a casino until they are 18.

But, the only real way for Neopets to get an actual confirmation of people's true age is by asking for a copy of driver's licenses, id cards, school ids... but that will seriously kill the amount of new users, since many people do not want to give away that sort of information, or take the time to scan/copy and fax the information to the office.

*shrugs* I'm pretty sure that the 13 thing is a matter of a minor not being allowed to enter a ontract with an adult. Making an account is entering into a type of contract with Neopets, saying you''ll obey their rules and if you don't , you'll get in trouble. It's why you have to agree to the TOS. It's probably much more simplistic to restrict everyone that under that age then to require specific written things that each individual person is allowed to do and not due. I don't think Neo has a staff to handle that sort of personalized service.

I'm sorry to hear that you're being limited due to your age. I honestly had no idea that many of the ppters were under 13. You all act very mature. To an extent, I feel your pain...I lost my AOL chat room job (years ago) because I was under the newly added minimum age. Didn't matter that I was training people, and that no one had any idea that I was only 16 at the time. (Yeah, so now to get back on topic...)

What I'm wondering is, where do they draw the line? If this is something to do with online rules, that's fine...but I know that in my home state of TN, gambling in all forms was illegal. Now we have a lottery, but our state constitution had to be changed to make it legal. I guess I'm just wondering if it could expand to a more country by country limitation, or even more specific than that.

Yep, this is pretty bad. I'm just wondering, since I turn 13 in a few months, will the account automatically turn into a 13+ account? I'm not sure if I remembering ever telling Neopets my birthday, so I sure I hope they have some sort of way...

I guess that having a political or religious board would be a bad idea, even among adults and teenager (more like especially ). But having an open and unmoderated, or user moderated board for 15+/18+ would be a good idea.

I'm positive many 18+ yr olds would be happy to monitor a chat board (without being given the power to freeze of course). And without all those over-zealous mods that haunt the other boards, people will feel safer speaking their minds and not worrying too much about getting frozen.

The only fault I see with this is that certain losers will abuse this system and will flood the board with dozens of topics consisting of "Liek **** **** *****! MY PeT 15 51CK! GIvE mE MediCiNal SOAp!" or something along those lines.
But if the user mods do a good job, posts like that should be at a minimum.

I also belive that 13+ should get an option to accept slightly 'innapropriate' language from others in neomail. On the boards, thats a bad idea, but if you're sending a good friend a neomail, you should be given the freedom to say something like password or even the humble asterix*, without the 'vulgar language' filter stopping you.

But, I can only see this happening if the majority of staff realise that a large portion of their players are older than 4.

I think people get the wrong impression when a see a forum bearing the heading "18+/Adults Only" and then they feel they have free reign to post porn, try to cyber, stupid things that do not need to be on Neopets. I don't think having age boards on Neopets would be a good idea because there is no guarentee that the user is not lying about their age. If you really want to talk politics, religion or anything off topic for Neopets, there is always Gaia Online. But even that board gets spammed stupidly by some of its dimmer members out the of the million or so that frequent the site. o.0;
