Anyway, I hate to break it to you, but I think your problem is the dial-up connection. Neopets games have a built-in timer that constantly contacts the neopets servers to send information about framerate and other data, that Neopets then uses to determine if you're cheating (ostensibly, it can also be used to determine if a large portion of the gaming populace has slower computers). What's happening is that the connection to Neopets is a bit...wonky...that seems the best way to put it. And since there's a hitch in the connection, everything else screetches to a halt until the connection is made and data packets sent.

And, of course, there's always the chance that I could be wrong.

The information sent from your computer to the Neopets servers are much slower than high-speed connections, therefore your latency high and you get lots of lag. Packet loss can also be factored in because dial-up connections aren't all that reliable anyway. Information can be lost along its travel and it has to be resent again.

I switch to Firefox because it's supposed to be faster than IE.

But, why are images loader slower than they are in IE?

Is there some way of telling Firefox to use cached images? I tried searching Help but couldn't find any info on that. =/

ALSO. Sometimes when I close PSP 7, I get the follow error:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!

abnormal program termination.

Nothing bad seems to happen though..

Mozilla tends to load images slower then IE, not sure why exactly.

Oh and make sure you have your cache set to a certain number of kb so it can save images, if you want to reach your cache in Firefox simply do this:
Tools>Options>Cache (which should be the at the bottom of the list, its set to 5000 kb by default though 0 would mean it wasnt saving anything, making it higher would likely let you save more but I'm pretty sure you know that already)

The program (or rather a linked library) errored out when attempting to terminate (close), and has been terminated (closed) by the system. There's no significant impact for you, but it still shows that something somewhere crashed.


Perception, mostly (perhaps IE takes longer to load the page itself, but takes the time to "preload" or start loading some of the images). I'm also pretty sure IE is rather tightly integrated into windows GDI+, while firefox uses platform-independant libraries (slower, but cross-platform).

Shapu and Soujiro, thank you both so much! *sigh* I guess I'll just have to put up with that games lag. It is annoying, especially since it's Only on Neo.

Of course now I have bigger fish to fry ... my computer it seems needs to be completely reformatted! That means all my saved emails, favorite places, etc. on that computer are gone - forever. And some of them were important enough to have saved in separate folders. I talked to my ISP today and they basically said that anything saved on that computer via their ISP is gone. Thank goodness I at least saved all my documents and graphics on disc. But once the computer's back I'll have hours and hours of fun re-downloading and installing just about everything.

Just want to know.. is Windows XP Service Pack 2 still buggy like it was when it was first released or are there patches to fix it up now?

Do ... NOT ... install ... SP2. Seriously, with my computer in the shop (over a week, one thing after another found and now has to be completely reformatted - and it's under a year old btw) - all my problems started after I dutifully d/l and installed SP2. All sorts of software problems, anything to do with ActiveX (which includes anti-spyware, a/v - especially Norton, even your flash and shockwave) is a mess because the SP2 messes with all ActiveX. Yes, I did uninstall it, but apparently there were still bits and pieces of it floating around on my computer (I wouldn't know where to look to get rid of it all).

I've spoken with a few techs, been on some forums and it seems almost all of the "pros" are recommending to not put this thing on your computer.

I know some people have had no problems with it, but they honestly seem to be in the minority. Even with the fixes various other software companies have put out, there are still problems for way too many people. Just my 2 cents ...

Now I've got another question. (Normally I would ask my geeky guy friend, but he's busy studying for his midterms. =/) I've set Firefox as my default browser. However, Microsoft being Microsoft, forces my email inbox to open in IE when I click on the "You have 2 new emails" MSN alerts. Any way to change this?

Nope. The messenger uses authentification which is closely tied to IE. (That's why you don't have to type your password when you click on the baloon)

Wait one more question.. does anybody know if there's a Security Update CD Microsoft are planning to release soon? I've got the February 2004 one but there've been quite a number of updates since then, and I've had to format my computer several times so I've had to go back to the Windows Update page each time just to re-download them.

Illumination, I have no idea ... the only CD I know of that you can get from Microsoft is the SP2. I didn't know you could get CDs with all the other updates! Boy would that save hours of time - my computer's being reformatted, so I'm going to have to go through d/l and installing allllll those updates again myself - on dial-up. That'll be a set everything to d/l and install and go to bed kind of night.

vivian, I don't know why your tech had you install the SP2 unless there's the support issue...apparently if you don't install SP2 your official Microsoft XP support will end in a year. Of course, they are supposedly coming out with a new o/s in the next year or so - either xp 64 bit or Longhorn are the 2 names the techs I use have said they've heard.

The last Microsoft Update CD was released in February 2004. It contained Windows XP SP1 and various updates, and Windows 2000 SP4, and other Windows Updates for other version of Windows. I'm not sure when they will release another update CD, but I'm hoping that it will fix all the problems with WinXP SP2. Service Pack 2 caused many business computers to fail.

Okay, I dunno if this is the computer, or what, but for the past week, I have not been able to access Gmail. Every time I do, it usually either says the operation timed out, or it just stops loading. It's not Firefox, because it does the same in IE. I also tried on my mom's laptop, and it does the same thing. Blah.
