Yes, the thumb definately counts as a finger. In fat, no matter how weird it may look compared to the other fingers, we need the thumb more than the other fingers, since it's opposable. In fact, it's like some sort of super finger. (But still counted with the regular fingers nonetheless.)

Five. All thumbs are fingers, but not all fingers are thumbs (thumbs are a subset of fingers). :)

finger, n.: any of the terminal members of the hand (sometimes excepting the thumb).

Well, according to pianists, the thumb is the first finger, so five. According to fiddle players, the index finger is the first finger, so four. Seeing as I'm both, I guess I'd have to say... four and a half?

Exactly so. Thumb is just the coolest of all the finger names, but its no more or less special than the rest of the fingers.
