The one thing that bugs me about it is that it tries to stop downloads. I'm using Dad's computer (mine completely died) and I had to reinstall YIM, AIM, MSN, everything. So I got sick of it asking if I wanted to download a program >.>

I probably should have phrased that better... now it comes up with a warning when I click "Download YIM now!" (for example), and once it's finished downloading it asks if I want to run the download. *eye roll*

Internet Explorer's "new" security checks are more screwed up than Logan Airport.

Service Pack 2 completely messed up all of the laptops and computers here..

I disabled almost all the new SP2 things, and had to updated almost all the programs on the computers.

i found it annoying, but i haven't had any real problems with it. i had issues at the beginning due to it trying to run it's own firewall and virus scanner, but it seems to be ok now, as i've managed to turn off the stupid pop-up thing it has.

The only problem I found is that sometimes when I load IE (microsofts own product), it get a screen saying page not found. If I refresh, it finds it.

Strange!

EDIT: I did find out that the Windows Firewall causes problems with Symantec Antivirus Corporate Editions 8.x when doing a remote client install (for any IT guys out there)

Linux is better, cause you can't get viruses. On Mac, there's a virus going through itunes.

You CAN get a virus - it's just that nobody writes them for Linux, since not as many people use Linux.

As for SP2 and the security fixes - just buy a router with a built-in firewall. I've had precisely zero problems with my computer in terms of popups and Windows Messenger since I bought my router and installed Mozilla instead of IE.

The reason that a lot of programs don't work with SP2 is because they aren't compatible with a lot of the new security patches that SP2 comes with, and so Windows won't let them load. IIRC, there are ways around that, and almost all of the major software firms are writing patches to old programs and new versions to co-ordinate with Microsoft on this. It's not as if these companies didn't know about the new service pack; MS was sending out bulletins and posting info on its website 9 months ago.

Hate to argue, but Linux doesn't have a registry for viruses to attach too. Well, Linspire, anyway.

Nor is there as many security holes for the viruses to spread through. Linux is a much more secure OS overall. It has most of it's doors locked, so to speak

Oh my stars, it's just a waste of space. SP 1 is also included, that's why it's so huge. 1 GB! The security centre is good too, but I have to install uxtheme.dll patch to allow 3rd party themes.

You can always tell the youngsters by those who think viruses need registries. Back when I was your age, I had to walk uphill both ways in the snow butt-nekkid just to find a cure for the Michelangelo virus! Ha!

Here's my two cents on Windows XP SP2:

Pros:
A firewall for people who don't have one.
No more nagging to install SP2.

Cons:
Nagging screen telling me that the status of Norton Antivirus is unknown.
IIS broke (The requested resource is in use.).
Conflicts with my firewall.
Little annoying shield at the taskbar.


My rating for the update: 3/10. It's basicly useless if you have decent Antivirus and Firewall.
