Common Scams
Written by toranize

Having been on Neopets for less than a month, I have seen all manner of shop-type scams. (Due to my style of fund-raising, I come across all sorts of scams in all types of shops.)

Login Page:
The first one has been covered quite a bit. You look in the shop wiz for an item and you find it for an unbelievably low price. You go to that shop and click on the item (thank goodness it's still there!) and find yourself at the "Oops! You're not logged in" page (The Aisha page). Check the address on the Aisha page, if it is not www.neopets.com, don't put in your name and password. You go back to the shop in question and report him (or her) if they haven't already been frozen.

NOTE: I have been entering fake usernames and passwords into these pages in order to discover where they go. A couple are ingenious. Some go right to the real Neopets home page (after sending off you name and password), One I saw produced "echo pages" real pages from neopets that had to pass through the other website before reaching your eyes. Another returned the "You Are Frozen" page. This would be _very_ shocking for someone if they thought they'd been frozen immediately for putting in their name and password. (good thing I didn't)

Item Scams:
Now this scam is a real pain. Unless you are paying close attention, then this could happen to you! You're shopping for an item, you see it for an unbelievable price. You go to the shop and click on the item. (Say a codestone for 500np) Without looking (or sometimes even when you look) you OK the transaction and buy the item. Only one small problem, the item is suddenly 50,000np (hopefully you aren't carrying that much). This is a script scam (yes they're illegal on Neopets). Sometimes you can catch scammers who are doing this scam by hand if you are patient enough to refresh the shop. the best way not to get caught by this scam is never carry more than 15-20K np while shopping, and check prices before buying. (My gf has a neat idea. She reports the shop then tries to buy the item at it's low price (refreshing the shop) before the shop gets frozen. Fun, Fun, Fun!)

Scammed Shops:
These are dead easy to spot. You're looking through the Wiz and see your item for an unbelievable price or for 1np, you quickly go to the shop and discover the entire shop is priced at 1np (a blowout sale). Buy as much as you can. someone has been hacken and you can get unbuyables this way (and things you can sell for money). I realize this is not nice to those who get scammed, but if you don't get it then someone else will.

Did you know that when the Purple Grarrl first showed up on the Neopets image servers, it had a green belly and yellow spots on his toes so that he would resemble Barney! It was probably just a joke by The Neopets Team, as it only lasted about a half-hour when the real purple Grarrl was uploaded onto the Neopets image servers. - The Wonder Weezel
